Debuting today, Deadly Manners pays tribute to 1940s radio shows (with a nod or two to the 1985 cult-classic Clue film), and the cast list reads like a fever dream of TV fan favorites: LeVar Burton helms the story as narrator, Kristen Bell stars as a rather unlikable hostess, and big names like RuPaul, Alisha Boe, and Anna Chlumsky pop up along the way as both guests and murder suspects.

“When I was kid, I was obsessed with books on tape,” Alex Aldea, director, producer, and composer of Deadly Manners told EW.

“For Deadly Manners though, we wanted to do an old school audio drama that was pure entertainment, where the audience can get out of their heads for a minute, relax and enjoy themselves. It’s a crazy world we are living in right now, and people are reacting in extremes. Deadly Manners is like classic Clue fun.”

Its mid-day on a Thursday in sunny Los Angeles, and Kristen Bell is sprawled out on her bed “taking a deep breath,” she says over the phone. For good reason: She’s been in motion for much of the past two months, shuttling between Atlanta — where she’s been filming the sequel to last year’s hit movie Bad Moms—and Los Angeles (the daughters she shares with husband Dax Shepard, Lincoln, 4, and Delta, 2, in tow), where she’s shooting the second season of her smart NBC sitcom The Good Place. “Simultaneously” — which is a word Bell uses often, and for good reason — she’s been doing voiceover work for a bunch of things, but mainly the much anticipated sequel to Frozen, in which she will reprise her role as Princess Anna. She was taping lines for attractions at Disneyland Tokyo this morning before she decided to rush home to lie down. “I was like, ‘I could sit in my car, or I could take the extra 10 minutes to drive home and lie in my bed,'” she explains. “Self-care,” she says, her voice only slightly muffled by pillows. “I really believe in self-care.”

This kind of stream-of-consciousness sharing is one of Kristen’s great charms, and it’s why the actress has carved out a reputation for being as open as a 24-hour diner. “Humans want nothing more than to be accepted, and I’m no different. That doesn’t happen by presenting perfection,” she tells me. “I believe in showing your dirty hands and your bumps and bruises and your faults, because that’s what makes people feel connected — and isn’t that kind of the purpose of, you know, being on Earth?” Here’s more of that kind of wisdom from Bell. NBC’s afterlife comedy ended its first season with Eleanor and her Good Place buddies getting their memories wiped by the dastardly Michael, but Season 2 won’t feel like a rerun, creator Michael Schur assures us. “You’re not going to see Season 1 happen again slowly over the course of Season 2,” he notes, adding that Eleanor is “immediately sort of suspicious and aware of the fact that there’s something amiss,” thanks to the note she left herself about Chidi. Speaking of Eleanor and Chidi, they were paired up as soulmates in Season 1, “but what happens when you just reset it?” Schur asks. “The way they meet each other in this new version is completely different from the first time.” Also completely different: Ted Danson’s performance as Michael. “At the very beginning of the premiere, we get to see him as he truly is,” Schur hints. “It’s really fun. I think of it as, like, ‘Ted Danson Unleashed. Ted Danson After Dark.’”

BONUS SPOILER!: Michael’s newly rebooted Good Place offers almost-heavenly touches that are actually hellish, like a bubbling clam-chowder fountain. And that’s not the only thing on the menu, Schur says: “In one of the restaurants, only serve Hawaiian pizza… which is an abomination.”

RETURN DATE: Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 10/9c (NBC); timeslot premiere Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8:30 pm

Kristen Bell is sneaking out of The Good Place to visit the land of animation again.

The time, the Frozen alum will lend her voice to Family Guy, playing a possible love interest for Brian, EW has learned exclusively.

In an episode of the animated Fox comedy slated to air in November, the Griffin canine meets her character, Martha (as seen below), when he gets a job at a suicide prevention hotline. “Brian falls for his officemate, Martha — a young woman trying to make her way in the big city,” says Family Guy executive producer Rich Appel. “She comes complete with her own theme song, which, like all great sitcom theme songs, literally tells you everything you need to know about her.” He adds: “Kristen Bell’s voice alone could sell anything.” [Source]

Throughout July, Bustle’s Comedy IRL package is featuring photo shoots, profiles, and stories of the women in comedy who are using their craft to elevate female voices and speak out on important issues. Comedy is powerful as hell, and we’re toasting the women who prove it. Check out the whole package here.

How can you laugh at a time like this? How can you focus on a TV show when the world is falling apart? Are you seriously cracking jokes when our leaders are making decisions that hurt people? For anyone who deals with dark, twisty, devastating realities by escaping into the warm embrace of the comedy world, these questions should be pretty familiar. And while it may seem like a frivolous endeavor to focus on laughs when the world outside feels like it’s going to hell, it’s OK to need that escape. And no one knows that better than actor Kristen Bell.

“Earth is very angry right now, and there’s no better time to chase comedy, I think,” she says when we speak on the phone in May. She’s squeezing our interview in on a lunch break on the set of her NBC comedy, The Good Place, but her tone isn’t that of someone worried about rushing back to work. Sure, she’s choosing her words diligently, but the conversation feels almost carefree. “People need comedy in their lives to just ease the current stress,” she adds. [More at Source]
