Rob Thomas is ready to write a “Veronica Mars” movie, the series creator told the Television Critics Association press tour crowd on Friday (Jan. 16).

Thomas, on hand to promote his ABC midseason remake of “Cupid,” lamented that the series has only been ordered for eight episodes this spring, but explained to reporters that the reduced load will allow him to finally write the long-rumored (hoped for?) adaptation of his beloved (and barely watched) UPN and CW series.

“I know this happened acrossthe board, so we don’t take it personally, but that we were reduced from 13 episodes to 8 episodes,” Thomas said. “But what that does mean for me is that I have a couple months to write the ‘Veronica Mars’ movie.”

A key problem — and it isn’t a small one — is that as of now, the hypothetical “Veronica Mars” movie has neither financing nor distribution, but Thomas emphasizes that series producer Joel Silver is eager to get the movie made.

I mean, Joel Silver does have a certain pile of money that he can decide on and he called me asking if we, you know, ‘Can we do this now?’ So I know that Kristen wants to do it. I want to do it. Joel wants to do it, and now I suddenly find myself with enough time to write that script. So that’s my — for me, that’s the next project.”

“Kristen,” of course, is Kristen Bell who played the eponymous teenaged gumshoe for the show’s 64 episode run, which began in 2004 and ended in 2007.

It isn’t expected that the movie will follow the “Veronica Mars, FBI” template Thomas developed as a possible fourth season of the show.

Party Down is an upcoming comedy on Starz from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, and two of his former Veronica collaborators, John Enbom and Dan Etheridge. At the TCA Television Critics Association press tour today, clips were shown, revealing some very funny scenes involving the main characters, a group of Los Angeles caterers, with dreams of making it in Hollywood. Memorable moments included Henry (Adam Scott) lamenting his combination of white dress shirt and pink bow tie by saying sarcastically that he was “going for the helpful gay pirate look”, to which Casey (Lizzy Caplan) assures him, “You don’t look helpful”; and Ron (Ken Marino) trying to rub a stain out of his pants, only for it to look like he was trying to rub something else out when he’s seen by Kyle (Ryan Hansen).

During the panel, Thomas noted this show was, “Five, nearly six years in the making,” saying it was first inspired when he, Enbom, Etheridge, and their co-creator Paul Rudd (yes, that Paul Rudd) were just getting into the original version of The Office. Said Thomas, “Paul Rudd started these gatherings to watch the show and started talking about wanting to write something that had a similar comedic tone. If that show was about people who had given themselves over completely to the rat race, it would be interesting to do a show about people who had chased the dream too long who’d refused to join the rat race.”

In addition, Thomas said Party Down will “lampoon different party ideas,” as each episode follows a different catered event, which Thomas revealed would include everything from, “a senior citizens mixer, to a party for a mobster being released, to a super sweet 16, to an adult video awards after party.”

The cast were asked if they had real life experiences that could relate them to these characters, and Lynch (The 40 Year Old Virgin / Role Models) replied, “I was a waitress for a long time. Most actors do it. You want to be somewhere else, but you’ve got to be there.” She recalled listening to “the delusions of people who think they’ll [be very successful] in a very short time,” while also knowing others who were “resigned” to life as a waiter.

Caplan (Cloverfield / True Blood) had experience both as a caterer and a waitress, and remembered her own time catering Hollywood events, and how she would see successful people and be, “So angry. I was so convinced, ‘It should be me!’ There’s really no one cockier than the unemployed actor.” Scott however joked, “I have never worked a day in my life. I’m very comfortable up here [on stage].”

Scott’s last TV series was HBO’s extremely serious Tell Me You Love Me, and asked to compare the experiences, Scott deadpanned, “After Tell Me You Love Me, I wanted to do something less hilarious.” Scott got big laughs as he said it was nice to now be “Driving to work and thinking, ‘I hope I can keep a straight face while working with Ken [Marino]‘, as opposed to, ‘I hope I can keep a straight face while we’re losing the baby.’”

Thomas said that certain television programs had influenced upcoming episodes, revealing, “My wife is fascinated with that show, so I’ve seen too many episodes of My Super Sweet 16,” while a “British documentary about a gangster coming home to his ‘acquittal party’” led to the episode about the mobster coming home from jail.

Asked if his Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell might appear in an episode, Thomas revealed, ‘Kristen Bell stopped by set the other day and wants to do one of the episodes. She has a gap near the end [of our production schedule]. I think Kristen may appear in the show, which could be really great.”
